Asia Pacific People's Power Forum Unites Voices for Justice, Equality, and Peace

Colombo, Sri Lanka ; The Third Asia Pacific People's Power Convention, held in Colombo from November 6th to 8th under the theme "Towards Futures of Justice, Equality and Peace," concluded with the launch of the Colombo Declaration.

This landmark document outlines proposals and action plans to establish justice, equality, and peace within the communities, countries, regions, and global contexts of the Asia Pacific, focusing on several key thematic areas.

Diverse International Participation :The convention saw the participation of nearly 100 social and human rights activists representing diverse organizations from 17 countries, including those from the Asia Pacific region as well as Denmark, Italy, Jordan, and Palestine.

A notable feature of the gathering was the attendance of both grassroots social activists who work closely with local populations, and delegates involved in policy formulation at organizational and state levels.

The Colombo Declaration: A Strategic Plan for ChangeThe Colombo Declaration presents an overarching strategy focused on the struggles of marginalized and oppressed populations who are deprived of their fundamental socio-political, economic, and environmental rights. It articulates desired alternative solutions and a strategic plan of action to realize those solutions by engaging with existing political and social structures.

Delegates emphasized the urgent need for systematic social transformation that goes beyond mere welfare programmes to address the suffering caused by current social turmoil and injustice.

Call for Collective Liberation Struggles:  A strong emphasis was placed by the resource persons and delegates on the similarity of struggles for liberation among populations affected by the consequences of imperialism and colonialism. This common ground necessitates a shift away from isolated local social movements towards collective national, regional, and global struggles.

The convention also highlighted the vital role of youth and women who are committed to social justice, equity, equality, and peace at regional and national levels.

The Third Asia Pacific People's Power Convention was jointly organized by Action Aid India and the National Fisheries Solidarity Organisation (NAFSO) of Sri Lanka.
