The Rise of Migrants Against Migrants

September 2, 2025 | Special Issue

In a troubling development emerging from Australia, a segment of residents who themselves arrived as migrants just a few years, or decades, ago are now vocally opposing new waves of migration. These individuals, identifying as “Australians,” must reckon with an uncomfortable truth: none of them are the original custodians of the land they now call home.

One need not elaborate at length to identify the true traditional owners of Australia; a simple exploration into the history and lives of Indigenous Australians provides all the clarity needed. Australia, fundamentally, is a nation built on migration. Its primary settler population came from Britain and Europe during the colonial period, and the continent was, for a long time, a British colony.

Even today, remnants of that colonial relationship are visible. Those who lack deep insight into Australia’s current political system only need to glance at the national flag, where the influence and legacy of Britain remain prominently displayed.

Geographically, Australia is vast. Yet, only a small fraction of its land and resources have been fully utilized to this day. This reality has been long recognized by successive Australian governments, who have maintained policies aimed at encouraging immigration, acknowledging that the land can support millions more.

As a result, Australia has evolved into a richly diverse and multicultural society, thanks entirely to the influx of people from various countries. It is now a land where anyone from any background can build a life. The visibility of British-origin identities within Australian society should not be a point of contention; it is a historical consequence. However, it becomes deeply problematic when some descendants of earlier migrant groups begin to perceive Australia as their exclusive domain.

The loudest voices against immigration today often come from such individuals, those who seem to have forgotten their own migration story. Their resistance to new arrivals stems from the belief that their claim to the land is more legitimate than that of others.

But News Whisperer
offers a different perspective on migrants, one shaped by compassion and realism. No one willingly abandons their homeland unless they are forced by dire circumstances, whether for freedom, safety, or survival. Those who migrate in search of liberty and basic dignity do not, and cannot, become native citizens of their new country overnight.

Nevertheless, if someone who has benefitted from the privilege of migrating to a safer, better life actively seeks to deny that same opportunity to others, then they carry a heavy moral debt.
