A Golden Opportunity for National Unity and Reconciliation for the NPP Government.

News Whisperer : 2025.06.28    The recent presidential and parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka have created a rare and historic opportunity for the National People's Power (NPP) government to lay the foundations for true national unity and reconciliation.

In the presidential election held in September 2024, the people of the Northern, Eastern, and Hill Country regions expressed, albeit implicitlytheir aspiration to live as one Sri Lankan nation under a unified leadership. This message was unequivocally reinforced in the parliamentary elections held in November 2024, when voters in these regions rejected the traditionally ethnic-based Tamil and Muslim political leaderships and instead elected representatives from the NPP.

However, the inability of the NPP leadership to fully recognize and embrace this political mandate and aspiration led to a significant setback in the local government elections held in May 2025, where the party failed to reaffirm its support at the grassroots level.

Despite this, Sri Lanka now has a unique and representative Parliament that reflects voices from every region and political viewpoint across the island. Yet, rather than hearing voices committed to national unity and collective progress, Parliament is now dominated by a few narrow-minded representatives from the North and East, whose rhetoric continues to promote ethnic division and separatist ideologies.

The 2024 general election saw the NPP secure nearly 25 parliamentary seats across the Northern, Eastern, and Hill Country regions. This included: Jaffna – 3 MPs, Vanni – 2 MPs, Batticaloa – 1 MP, Nuwara Eliya – 5 MPs, Digamadulla – 4 MPs, Trincomalee – 2 MPs, Badulla – 6 MPs, Matale – 4 MPs

A significant majority of these members are Tamil and Muslim representatives, marking a clear shift from the support previously given to Tamil political parties that, since 1977, aligned themselves with separatist groups and supported the demand for a separate administration in the North and East.

This diverse and inclusive representation provides the NPP government with a level of national legitimacy and unity that no previous administration has ever enjoyed—not only in the North and East but also in the Hill Country.

The message from voters in these areas was clear: they desire to live in one, undivided Sri Lanka under a national leadership they can trust. They have shown a commitment to reconciliation and coexistence.

What Must the Government Do Now? It is now imperative for the NPP government to empower the representatives elected by the people of the North, East, and Hill Country to take leadership roles in addressing the needs of their constituencies across various sectors. Moreover, the public must be actively involved in these initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability.

To do so, the government must foster and promote a new generation of national-level leaders from these regions. Creating the space, opportunity, and environment for such leadership to emerge is the responsibility of the NPP leadership.

Rather than relying on  showcase peace efforts and outdated reconciliation models, the government must create real opportunities for the people of the North, East, and Hill Country to feel genuinely valued as equal citizens of Sri Lanka. Only then can sustainable national unity and integration truly be achieved.

This moment represents a golden opportunity for the NPP, not only to advance a long-awaited national reconciliation agenda but also to redefine the political identity of Sri Lanka as an inclusive, united, and forward-looking nation.
